Over 11m/- worth of smuggled minerals seized

TANZANIA Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA) in collaboration with the police force and Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) have seized illegal minerals worth 11.2m/- which were to be smuggled through the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

TMAA information officer Yisambi Shiwa disclosed this yesterday in Dar es Salaam saying a foreigner and Tanzanian national were arrested in possession of the minerals with no legal papers to export the precious metals as stipulated in the Mineral Act of 2010.

He said the foreigner (name withheld) was travelling to Bangkok, Thailand and was nabbed with different kinds of minerals including diamond, aquamarine, sapphire, green tourmaline, quartz and rhodolite.

Eng. Shiwa said in another incident, a Tanzanian national was arrested enroute to Germany and was found in possession of minerals including amethyst, moonstone cabochon, rulilated quartz (cabochon), rulilated quartz(faceted), chrysoprase, green tourmaline, ruby, red garnet, green quartz, zircon and rhodolite.

“The two suspects are in police custody and will face legal action,” he said noting that between July 2015 and January 13 this year, there were 14 incidents of mineral smuggling estimated at a grand value of 3.2bn/-.
“Most of the seized minerals were intercepted by TMAA’s inspectors dispatched at Julius Nyerere International Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and Mwanza International Airport,” he detailed.
“All the minerals were confiscated by the government,” the official said and urged the public to team up with TMAA in the ongoing fight against smuggling of minerals.

Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA) is a semi-autonomous institution established in 2009; through Government Notice No. 362 under the Executive Agencies Act, Cap. 245. TMAA took over the functions previously undertaken by the Minerals Auditing Section (commonly called GAP) in the Minerals Department under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

The agency is aimed at facilitating maximization of Government revenue from the mining industry through effective monitoring and auditing of mining operations and ensuring sound environmental management in the mining areas.
TMAA also conducts financial and environmental audit as well as auditing of quality and quantity of minerals produced and exported by miners in order to maximize benefits to the Government from the mining industry for sustainable development of the Country.
