Minerals Found in Tanzania

Uranium

Uranium is a hard, dense, malleable, silver-white radioactive metallic element that occurs naturally in low concentrations (a few parts per million) in soil, rock, surface and groundwater.

Tanzania has huge deposits of Uranium. Uranium Ore fields are maily found in the following areas: Namtumbo (Mkuju), Bahi, Galapo, Minjingu, Mbulu, Simanjiro, Lake Natron, Manyoni, Songea, Tunduru, Madaba and Nachingwea.

Since Uranium is a radioactive element, it is used mainly in commercial nuclear power plants. Other uses include military weapons (tanks, bullets and missiles); manufacture of phosphate fertilizers; toner in photography, additive for glass and ceramics, mordant for textiles; ballast for helicopters and aero planes; luminous paint for watch dials and other instruments.
