Minerals Found in Tanzania

Gold is a metallic element. It has a characteristic yellow color, is one of the heaviest substances known (specific gravity 19.32), is soft, and very malleable and ductile.

Gold mining history in Tanzania can be traced back in the 1890’s during the German colonial rule. Tanzania experienced a notable yield of gold from mechanized mines from 1938 to 1966. Production declined thereafter due to global collapse of gold prices. Large scale gold production resumed in 1998. Currently, Tanzania is ranked 4th in gold production in Africa with average annual production of 50 tones.

Primary usage of gold is in jewelry. Other uses of gold are currency backing, electronics, computers, dentistry, medical, aerospace, awards and symbol of status, glass making and gold gilding and gold leaf.
